At St-Laurent Academy, we focus on each student as a unique, individual learner. Our team of caring, knowledgeable, creative and well-rounded teachers/educators are able to facilitate and deliver a strong curriculum that challenges and allows for students to demonstrate what they know through diversified activities, tasks and assignments.
Our small class sizes, a maximum of 15 students, ensures that our teachers can design and enrich curriculum that is tailored to our students’ multiple intelligences. Our tight-knit faculty communicate and work closely together, engaging the community and external professionals, to build a true team around each student as they move from grade to grade.
Communication with parents, students and team members is at the center of our success. Tools such as Google Classroom, Google Calendars, our School Portal, regular email updates, accessibility for parents to meet and contact our teaching team and administration, and formal and informal student/parent meetings are just a few ways that we ensure everyone is moving toward the same goals for your child.
Our private elementary school in Ottawa Program reflects our belief that physical activity and well-being are essential to learning. On a daily basis, and within a safe and dynamic environment, our students participate and have fun in daily Phys. Ed classes, 2 outdoor recesses, a variety of clubs and teams, as well as a weekly, enriched Phys Ed program. This program takes us out into the community to work with specialists in areas such as tennis, swimming, yoga, golf, skiing, archery, rock climbing, cross fit, and even parkour.
With a diverse student body, we recognise the importance of multiculturalism and the value of understanding a variety of languages. At St-Laurent Academy, we offer multiple French streams, from core to advanced, as well as an “extended” French program and club. ESL (English as a Second Language) programs are available to meet the needs of our growing international community.
Field Trips are part of our curriculum, as our classrooms move beyond the school walls. Exploration throughout Ottawa’s museums, galleries, sports venues, historical sites and governmental facilities help to bring our curriculum to life. Larger, annual trips are planned for our different grade levels, which take us outside the Province and internationally at times. Let’s not forget our own outdoor classroom, at the Macoun Marsh, which is key to our private Elementary Science Program!
At St-Laurent Academy Private Elementary School in Ottawa, our Resource Program and team offers a warm and supportive environment for students to receive out-of-class instruction and guidance to supplement their regular curriculum. Students in the Resource Program receive both 1-1, focused, out-of-class and in-class support delivered by a specialist teacher using a variety of tools and assistive technology. The resource team also works very closely with outside agencies and classroom teachers to ensure that learning is accessible and engaging for all students. Our goal is to provide our resource students with the support and tools needed to build independence, confidence, and both academic and social success.
St-Laurent Academy proudly implements the Barton Reading and Spelling Program to resolve issues concerning spelling, reading and writing. The Barton Reading and Spelling Program was initially develop address to learning struggles related to dyslexia. It is Orton Gillingham influenced, which is a structured language approach that is different in both what is taught (reading and spelling are taught as related subjects) and how it is taught (the methodology).
Our system is a multi-sensory, direct, explicit, structured and sequential program designed for intense intervention. The progress that we have witnessed firsthand implementing the Barton Reading and Spelling Program over the history of our school is astounding. St-Laurent Academy has an international student body and we recognize the importance of servicing our students who are new to our school, community and country, and whose first and even second language is not English.
Our Elementary ESL (English Second Language) Program is to provide our ESL students with the core, base knowledge of the English Language. Following the Ontario Ministry guidelines, we focus on building confidence, knowledge and application of language in 5 key areas: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing and Orientation. As our ESL students progress and succeed moving through the ESL levels/stages, we guide and support, with the goal of successfully integrating them into the full English, Ontario curriculum.
ESL facilitation occurs both within the core classroom, as well as in small groups with direct, specific instruction. Ensuring our ESL students also benefit from a variety of school wide activities, games, cultural outings and competitions, that encourage and make learning a new language fun, is core to the ESL program.
St-Laurent Academy is committed to environmental education. With Environmental concerns looming large across the planet, we are committed to enabling our students to be part of the solution. Environmental responsibility is a theme woven into many of our subjects, and activities at the school.
At St-Laurent Academy Elementary & Junior High, we are guided by the Multiple Intelligences Theory (MI Theory), developed by Howard Gardner, a professor of Education at Harvard, in 1983. The MI Theory has been well researched by educators since then, and has enjoyed a great deal of success over the past 25 years. Each child embodies varying levels of these different intelligences, and thus each student has a unique cognitive profile. Traditionally, schools have almost exclusively emphasized the development of logical intelligence and linguistic intelligence (mainly reading & writing). We believe that students are better served by a broader vision of education. Our teachers use different methodologies, exercises and activities to engage all students, not just those who excel at linguistic and logical intelligence. We strive to provide opportunities for our students to use and develop all the different intelligences, and their natural talents. Gardner has identified eight basic types of intelligence:
We believe that physical activity benefits mind, body and spirit, and hope to inspire our students to make physical activity a part of their daily routine. Our program is taught by a Phys Ed Specialist. Four days per week classes are held in our full-size gymnasium or outside in our soccer field, where students are engaged in both fitness and sport. Once a week, healthy living and nutrition is covered in a classroom setting. These lessons sometimes involve guest speakers or visits from orgnisations such as Planned Parenthood. We also take Phys Ed field trips throughout the year, to have students experience activities like rock climbing and skiing. Physical Education has always been a pillar of St-Laurent Academy’s balanced philosophy of education.
Experiencing a well-balanced curriculum not only includes academics and participation in physical education, but also exposure and enjoyment of/in the Arts. At St-Laurent Academy, we celebrate a student body who creates and communicates through a variety of arts-based mediums, offering the following programs on a semestered basis, facilitated by a specialist in each field:
As Ottawa is a hub for Arts and Culture, we regularly engage our students through trips to museum and art gallery expositions, performances at the National Arts Center and annual events encompassing literary and media arts development
Our learning philosophy is centred on students who are happy, healthy, and active. As such, St-Laurent Academy is proud to be offering school uniforms for purchase in house, which focus on students remaining comfortable and active throughout the day.
Our lunch program is offered as an optional service to all our Elementary and High School students. A set menu is provided for each day, which includes a daily meal and snack. Our menues are created with the consultation of our in-house nutritionist. The daily cost is $8.00 per student.
