Multiple Intelligences

At St-Laurent Academy Elementary & Junior High, we are guided by the Multiple Intelligences Theory (MI Theory), developed by Howard Gardner, a professor of Education at Harvard, in 1983. The MI Theory has been well researched by educators since then, and has enjoyed a great deal of success over the past 25 years. Each child embodies varying levels of these different intelligences, and thus each student has a unique cognitive profile. Traditionally, schools have almost exclusively emphasized the development of logical intelligence and linguistic intelligence (mainly reading & writing). We believe that students are better served by a broader vision of education. Our teachers use different methodologies, exercises and activities to engage all students, not just those who excel at linguistic and logical intelligence. We strive to provide opportunities for our students to use and develop all the different intelligences, and their natural talents. Gardner has identified eight basic types of intelligence:

  • linguistic (“word” smart)
  • logical and mathematical (“number & reasoning” smart)
  • spatial (“picture” smart)
  • musical (“music” smart)
  • kinesthetic (“body” smart)
  • interpersonal (“people” smart)
  • intrapersonal (“self” smart)

Daycare Facilities

St-Laurent Academy’s main campus is centrally located at 641 Sladen Avenue in Ottawa’s Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward area, offering daycare, elementary (K to Grade 8) and high school programs. It is surrounded by the neighborhoods of Manor Park, Beacon Hill, Rothwell Heights, Cardinal Heights, and Montfort. The school is nestled in a residential area and is adjacent to Forbes Park. The classroom experience also extends outside the walls of our facilities in the form of monthly field trips, visits to our auxiliary location at the Ottawa Athletic Club, through excursions to our Outdoor Classroom located at Macoun Marsh and also through partnerships within local communities.

Athletics

St-Laurent Academy and the Ottawa Athletic Club (OAC) have partnered to offer a SECOND licensed Daycare program at Ottawa’s premiere fitness facility. Health Policies

The following policies are in place for the health and safety of all students and staff, as well as to reduce the spread of illness:

  • If a child’s fever reaches 38.5 C/101 F, a parent will be called to pick them up immediately.
  • If a child has diarrhea more than twice in one day, a parent will be called to pick them up immediately.
  • If a child vomits, a parent will be called to pick them up immediately.
  • If a child is unusually lethargic and cannot participate in classroom activities, a parent will be called to retrieve them.
  • If a child has any two of the following symptoms, a parent will be called to pick them up immediately: fever, cough, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, sore throat, green nasal discharge, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Students must stay home until their fever has been absent for 24 hours. They should only return to school when they are symptom-free (other than a residual cough) and able to participate in daily activities. If in doubt, please consult with a doctor before returning to school. Should we detect a rash or other skin lesion, a parent will be called to pick up their child. A child can only return to the classroom when they are rash-free or with a doctor’s note.
