Dear St-Laurent Academy Parents,

Today, the Premier of Ontario announced, on the advice of our Chief Medical Officer of Health and other leading public health officials, the further extension of the declaration of emergency across the province and the continued closure of all public places and establishments not deemed essential service. Therefore, St-Laurent Academy Daycare, Elementary and High School at 641 Sladen Avenue and the Daycare at 2525 Lancaster Road, will be closed until April 23, 2020. The order will remain in place until April 23, 2020, at which point it will again be reassessed and considered for extension.

COVID 19 – Update # 5

March 20, 2020

Dear Parents,

In addition to our communication sent out to our families this evening, I would like to inform you, as anticipated, that the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, announced today that the school closings will be extended beyond April 5. The date of return to class will be communicated to you when it is known.

As indicated, our phase 2 plans are in alignment with the above decision.

Rest assured that as soon as we receive more details about the extension of the school closings, we will make it our duty to share this information with you.

Good luck with tomorrow’s Phase 1 commencement of our online platform.

COVID 19 – Update # 4

March 12, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardian,

Based on advice communicated this afternoon from Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health and the experts at the COVID-19 Command Table, the minister of education has issued a ministerial order to close all publicly funded schools in Ontario for two weeks following March break in response to the emergence in Ontario of COVID-19.

As we alerted our families in our previous communication yesterday, we are taking the next step and following the above recommendation and St-Laurent Academy, following March Break for two weeks, we will be closed for all Kindergarten to Grade 12 and Daycare programs from March 23rd – April 3, 2020 inclusively.

As we are still in consultation with our advisors regarding our Daycare program for both locations, we will be confirming tomorrow by 4:00pm, Friday, March 13th, 2020, if our Daycare programs will be run for the week of March 16th – 20th, 2020.

Student, staff and families safety are our priority. As more information unfolds, you will be notified as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.

Covid 19 Update # 2

March 4 2020

Dear Parents,

During this time of uncertainty with regard to the Coronavirus (Covid 19), St-Laurent Academy is committed to working with parents and our Health Community in ensuring that we provide a healthy and safe environment for all students and employees in our Daycare and School.

Please refer to the email below from the City of Ottawa Public Health (OPH) and click on the links to read updates related to the Coronavirus. Should St-Laurent Academy receive notice of any viable cases within the school community, we will immediately follow the directives provided by Ontario Ministry of Health and/or the OPH, which may include a total closure of our facility for a minimum of fourteen days.

It has been stated by Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, that schools will play a critical role in slowing down the spread of the virus. We as a school therefore are committed to ensure that we have compliance with all families in following both our school policies and those of Public Health.

St-Laurent Academy is implementing a stricter health policy with regard to student sickness. Our policy is that students must not attend daycare/school if they or a member of their direct family have had a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or any signs of respiratory illness, within the past 24 hours. All family members must be symptom free for a minimum of 24 hours prior to students returning to School/Daycare.

If your child comes to school with any of the above symptoms, you will be required to pick your child up immediately ** and the child will only be able to return to school if a doctor’s note is provided stating that the child is symptom free.

Adults with any of the symptoms above are asked not to enter the school building. If you have any of the above symptoms, or if you or anyone in your family has traveled to any of the most vulnerable regions (please refer to the OPH below) within the last 21 days, we require that you do not enter the building.

**It is essential that every family in addition to contact details for both parents or guardians, must have an Emergency Contact on file with the office. Either a parent, guardian or Emergency Contact must be available to pick up a child within 1 hour of receiving a phone call from the school.

If you have not provided this information or you need to update your contact information, please contact the office as soon as possible.

In Addition

  1. Please encourage your child to follow good hand hygiene & respiratory practices, and demonstrate these at home. Include: proper hand washing (including the necessity to do so prior to eating), sneezing/blowing/coughing into a kleenex, or the use of a flexed elbow, and how to dispose of soiled kleenexes . These actions will also be reinforced at school.
  2. Provide your child with a water bottle and remind them not to share drinks or other foods.
  3. St-Laurent Academy has installed a number of sanitizing stations within the school, please show your child the appropriate way to use these dispensers. We also strongly encourage parents/guardians entering the school to make use of the sanitizers.
  4. If your child has a regular cold, runny nose or cough, please send a box of Kleenex to school with them.
  5. Cleaning and disinfecting of common areas by our maintenance staff will be on-going during the school day.
  6. St-Laurent Academy may cancel, or make changes to any of our upcoming Field Trips, Enriched PE classes or end of year school events. We will at all times be mindful of any events where there will any public access.

The co-operation of everyone is required in order to maintain a healthy environment for both our children and for our staff members.

Note that due to the fluidity of this situation, updates and changes to our policies may happen at any time. Please ensure that you read all communication from the school with subject heading ‘Covid 19’ immediately.

Yours sincerely

Bill Kokkaliaris
School Director
