Don't Miss The 'Our Kids' Private School Expo on October 1st

St-Laurent Academy is excited to once again be taking part in the ‘Our Kids Private School Expo’ on Sunday, October 1st.  Drawing private schools from across the city, the expo is an opportunity for prospective parents to meet with representatives from private schools and discuss educational possibilities for their child.

The principal of St-Laurent Academy, Bill Kokkaliaris, has seen the expo become an important part of the school year for prospective parents due to the busy schedules they have. “Many families cannot find the time to meet six or seven schools and discuss what each has to offer. By having many schools at the expo, it allows parents to meet each school in a single afternoon and get a feeling what each one has to offer.” However, Mr. Kokkaliaris cautions against parents simply walking around the expo without having a plan. “My advice to families thinking about enrolling at a private school is to attend the expo with a list of questions. This can include subjects such as class sizes, curriculum standards, and how often the students have Phys Ed. Once they have this information, parents will be able to narrow down their list.”

Last year’s expo was well attended with St-Laurent Academy’s representatives speaking with hundreds of families. Andrea Crupi, who runs the admissions program at St-Laurent Academy, was at the school’s booth all afternoon and felt the expo was a positive experience for families. “The expo was a chance for parents as well as students to meet with us and see that our school is not some faceless business. We promote our school as being personalized and I think that comes across when we speak to families.” The expo also allows families to have the admissions process explained to them. “I think the biggest part of becoming a part of our St-Laurent Academy is understanding that it is not just signing a few papers and then the child is in our classroom. We always advise parents to have a tour of our building followed by the student doing a visit day, which includes following their grade’s schedule. Ultimately, we need to make sure it’s a right fit; that the child can succeed with us and we can succeed with the child.”

The ‘Our Kids Private Expo’ is at the Shaw Centre, next to the Rideau Centre, on October 1st at 12pm-4pm.
