Elementary & Junior High Curriculum

Although we utilize the Ontario Curriculum as a base, our teachers bring so much more to their classrooms. They are specialists in their subjects, and as such, are experts in their field, bringing unique passion and richness to their teaching.

Teachers at St-Laurent Academy use hands-on, multi-sensory, audio visual, online, digital media, as well as other strategies to reach every one of their students. Guided by the principles of the Multiple Intelligences Theory (MI Theory) our students are actively engaged with all their senses in every subject. Learning through the different intelligences helps to enhance and strengthen their learning experiences, and ultimately brings a sense of pride and achievement to our community.

English & Math

English and math are core subjects across the grades. Many of our students have uncovered their “gifts” in these areas through our application of the MI theory. Others experience success and pride, often for the first time, in subjects they have traditionally found difïcult. Our teaching staff work very hard to ensure every child is reached in these two crucial subjects.

French

CORE FRENCH is offered to all grades, and in the senior grades students are offered both CORE and ADVANCED FRENCH. Drama, songs, and movement are incorporated into our french teaching, as well as reading, written expression, and grammar. Our small class size allows for individualized attention for those students requiring more challenging work, as well as, those students requiring more support.

Social Studies

Social Studies is a very exciting and hands-on subject at St-Laurent Academy. Children are naturally interested in the world around them, so we engage all of their senses by digging deeply into the history and geography of the world. Classroom learning occurs in creative and stimulating environments and is further enhanced by excursions to the many cultural and historical attractions offered in the National Capital region.

Art, Drama, Vocal & Instrumental Music

Art, Drama, and Music are part of our regular weekly curriculum, offered to all students. Students who have gifts in the arts may further develop their abilities in these areas through teacher mentoring, classroom projects, exhibits, and performances. In keeping with our multiple intelligences approach, Art, Drama and Music are also interwoven into other subject areas.

Science

Science is a much loved class by all of our students. It is richly explored with all the senses, beginning in Preschool. Our Science classroom is also somewhat of a museum, with its intriguing displays and amazing artifacts.

Students also regularly visit our outdoor classroom at Macoun Marsh. This very unique location is the perfect environment to learn about nature, in nature. Learn more about our award-winning environmental science program.

S.T.A.R.S. (Student Success Through Achievement, Reflection, and Study)

S.T.A.R.S. is a weekly class for all students at St-Laurent Academy where interaction and discussion are the tools used to promote and develop the study skills essential to achieving academic success. In a fun and active environment homeroom teachers lead their students through examinations of topics as varied as the importance of literacy, organizational skills and test/exam preparation. A multi-week exploration  of the theory of multiple intelligences and learning styles is also done in S.T.A.R.S. class.

Computer Technology

Computer technology is taught in our newly equipped computer lab, and is integrated with all the other subjects. Students are instructed in keyboarding, how to use spreadsheets, safe web browsing and other essential computer skills. We are strong supporters of technology, and it is used extensively by both students and teachers alike.

Physical Education

Physical Education is offered to our students three times a week either in our beautiful big gym or weather permitting, at our wonderful park, which is connected to the school. The students also take part in skating sessions off-site.

As well as all the traditonal sports, students are exposed to tennis, gymnastics, martial arts, yoga, running, aerobics, modern dance, and creative movement. At St-Laurent Academy we understand that a healthy lifestyle promotes better learning. Our curriculum incorporates, personal fitness, sportsmanship, nutrition, health and well being.
